White House Science Fair

I don't know about you, but I vividly remember standing in front of my fourth grade science class, with my version of the solar system, of course complete with styrofoam planets. I remember I colored the styrofoam planets with markers, then jammed wire coat hangers through them so they would align correctly. I remember my hands being covered with marker ink when I was giving my little presentation.

My dad helped me with my project, so it was one of the best in the class (my dad was THE ultimate project helper!) I also remember that, although I got an A, there was one other kid in the class whose project was better than mine because he used gum to illustrate the planets' various moons.

So, science projects and science fairs can be a memorable experience for any kid. But can you imagine the kids who are giving presentations at the WHITE HOUSE SCIENCE FAIR today!?!? I mean, seriously. Unforgettable, right?

President Obama is expected to join the science fair and make remarks any moment now. And I can bet you, these kids are nervous!

Don't expect to see any styrofoam solar systems, though. These kids are very much beyond that. They're winners from a broad range of science, technology, engineering, and math competitions.

Here's just a sampling of some of the exhibits that will be on display today:

- A motorized chair for people with disabilities

- A solar car

- A software spacecraft navigation system

- A new kind of shock absorbent gel rubber for helmets

- A "smart toilet"that conserves water

- A "smart wheel" steering wheel designed to combat distracted driving
