Analysis: Trump, Clinton -- The Most Unpopular Candidates in 30 Years

08-31-2016

In so many ways the 2016 presidential election cycle has already made so much history.

On the Republican side, a political novice dashed the dreams of a crowded field of experienced White House hopefuls. While the Democrats became the first major political party to nominate a female candidate for commander-in-chief.

Yet the campaigns of both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have also been saddled with historic controversies involving character, temperament, and trustworthiness -- issues that lead to another milestone in American political history.

Now, the pair seeking the highest office in the land are the least popular candidates in the last 30 years, according to a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll.

Clinton is viewed unfavorably by 56 percent of the poll respondents, a representative sampling of the adult population. Trump's unfavorable rating is 63 percent. But among registered voters, they're virtually tied: 59 percent to 60 percent respectively.

"Here's the good news for Donald Trump. Really, the only candidate he could probably beat is Hillary Clinton, and she's running," CBN's David Brody of The Brody File told Beltway Buzz. "On the Bernie Sanders side, the only candidate they think could beat Hillary Clinton is Donald Trump. And they're very concerned that Hillary Clinton could be in big trouble."

The new polling data coincided with the Republican nominee's face-to-face meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto - a trip designed, according to Brody, to show the billionaire businessman as presidential.

"You get the sense that there's something they're going to get out of it," Brody suggested of Trump's Mexico trip.

There's a whole two months between now and Election Day. And while it's hard to predict at this point whether Clinton or Trump will prevail, one thing we know for certain is this cycle will continue, and ultimately end, with making history.
