US Sees Record Number of In Vitro Births
09-08-2014
Up to 2 percent of babies born in the United States are conceived with advanced fertility help, according to a new report by the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology.
The use of in vitro fertilization led to a record 61,740 babies in 2012. That's 2,000 more than in 2011, accounting for 1.5 percent of all births in the nation.
IVF is a procedure in which eggs and sperm are mixed in a lab dish.
The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology also said more women are using one embryo at a time to avoid multiple births.
