Antidepressants Linked to Suicidal Behavior?

A new study has found a possible link between antidepressants and suicidal behavior in young people given high doses early in treatment.

The study was published online April 28 by the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine.

Researchers discovered teens and young adults who started treatment with higher than recommended doses were twice as likely to have suicidal thoughts or try to hurt themselves, especially in the first three months.

"There is no evidence that starting at a higher dose is beneficial," Dr. David Brent, with the University of Pittsburgh, said.

Brent was not involved in the research but wrote a commentary about the study also published in the journal.
