California is now the fifth state to legalize assisted suicide.

Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill on Monday that allows terminally ill patients to legally end their lives using doctor-prescribed drugs.

The bill includes requirements that the patient be capable of taking the medication without assistance and that two doctors approve the procedure, but opponents say the bill legalizes premature suicide.

"People should know where assisted suicide is legal, some people's lives will be lost without their consent to mistakes and abuse. No safeguards have ever been enacted or even proposed to prevent that outcome, which can never be undone," Marilyn Golden, with the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund, said.

At least 24 other states have introduced right-to-die legislation this year, but the measures have yet to be approved.
