JERUSALEM, Israel -- An elite Israeli naval unit intercepted an Iranian weapons shipment making its way to the Gaza Strip Wednesday.

The ship, named the Klos-C, was en route to a stopover in Sudan when commandos from the Israeli Navy's Shayetet 13 intercepted it about 1,500 kilometers from Israel.

The ship was flying under a Panamanian flag.

On board, they found Iranian-made 302m long-range missiles, which were used to bomb northern Israeli cities during the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006.

"This shipment [was] meant to reach the hands of terrorist organizations in Gaza that are waging an ongoing armed conflict against Israel. These terrorist organizations systematically use such weaponry against the Israeli civilian population," the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement Wednesday.

The navy is escorting the Klos-C to the port in Eilat, where its cargo will be examined more thoroughly.
