Iron Dome Intercepts Rocket Barrage

JERUSALEM, Israel -- An Iron Dome anti-missile battery intercepted five rockets overnight Wednesday fired at the coastal city of Ashkelon by Gaza-based terror cells.

In response to the rocket fire, Israeli pilots targeted several terror sites in northern Gaza, identifying direct hits on an underground rocket launch pad, a weapons warehouse and a weapons manufacturing facility.

"Tonight, 'Iron Dome' once more proved its efficiency in protecting the civilians of southern Israel," Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said in a statement released by the IDF Spokesperson's Office. "The IDF response was precise, swift and efficient in eliminating terror capabilities that only exist in order to terrorize, kill and main Israelis."

On Monday, despite stern warnings from the IDF, Gaza terrorists fired two rockets near the end of the funeral of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Both rockets missed their mark, exploding in a field near the security barrier.

In anticipation of rocket fire, the IDF stationed Iron Dome batteries in the area to protect the dignitaries who attended the funeral.
