Scott Walker Meets Netanyahu, Herzog in Israel

05-13-2015

JERUSALEM, Israel -- Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, looking to burnish his foreign policy credentials in a likely run for the GOP presidential nomination, met in Israel Tuesday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other leaders, including opposition leader Yitzhak Herzog.

Walker's success as a Republican governor in a strongly Democratic state puts him in the upper tier of potential candidates.  He's also endured trial by fire as the target of union efforts to defeat him and then recall him.

But many Republican voters have questions about his stands on foreign policy.

The Obama administration's treatment of Israel and Netanyahu rankles a majority of GOP primary voters, making it more important that Walker speak out on the issue.

Details of Tuesday's meeting with the prime minister were few and far between.

Walker tweeted, "Our democracies share common values and work to confront shared threats," according to the Israel Hayom website.

After his meeting with Labor Party leader Herzog, Walker tweeted that the meeting went well and noted, "He has ties to U.S. president going back to FDR (Franklin Roosevelt)."

The governor also met with Jewish Home Party leader Naftali Bennett, who will be part of the next Netanyahu cabinet as well as Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein.
