Israeli Defense Forces launched an artillery strike at Syrian army post Wednesday after an Israeli officer was wounded by fire from across the border.

The fighting between Syrian forces loyal to President Bashar Assad and opposition rebels took place at the strategic Quneitra crossing in the Syrian sector of the Golan Heights, where observers report the al-Qaeda affiliate, the al-Nusra front has won control.

The Israeli officer was lightly to moderately wounded after being shot in the chest.  The 28 year-old military doctor is in stable condition.

Earlier in the day, Israel's military advised farmers in the Golan and other civilians to avoid the border with Syria as the fighting inside Syria intensified.

If radical Islamists have seized the Quneitra crossing, it could signal an increased threat to both military outposts and civilian communities inside Israel.
