The Department of Homeland Security is considering easing its deportation policy of illegal immigrants.

Specifically, the agency is looking at relaxing the rules for immigrants who returned illegally after being deported, but don't have any serious criminal offenses. They may be allowed to stay.

Esmeralda Cornejo is a case in point. She came to the United States to earn more money to help her ailing mother in Mexico.

Although she's been working and paying taxes, she and her U.S.-born children are being deported.

"Please don't send me back," she pleaded. "I know I was wrong, but it's not my kids' fault."

Homeland Security's proposal could offer significant new protections for some immigrants, but it would still fall short of the sweeping changes sought by some.
