Obama Picks Former P&G Exec. as VA Secretary

President Barack Obama is nominating former Procter and Gamble executive Robert McDonald to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs.

If the Senate agrees, McDonald will succeed Eric Shinseki, who resigned last month as reports of scandal, delays and cover-ups surfaced at VA clinics across the country.

A West Point graduate, McDonald also served as a captain in the U.S. Army.

The 61-year-old headed Proctor and Gamble for 33 years, running operations around the world for more than 5 billion customers.

"The choice suggests a real focus on customer satisfaction, as opposed to what you might get from a retired general or medical leader," said Phillip Carter with the Center for a New American Security, the Washington Post reported. "It is probably a wise choice given the concerns right now of veterans."
