Political Parties Polarizing America More than Ever

America has become increasingly divided along political lines over the past 20 years, according to a Pew Research survey.

The Pew Research Center questioned more than 10,000 adults on their ideology and found that 1 in 5 Americans have across-the-board conservative or liberal views. In 2004, only 1 in 10 felt strongly one way or the other.

Additionally, more members from each party believe the opposing party is a threat to the nation's well-being.

"On measure after measure - whether primary voting, writing letters to officials, volunteering for or donating to a campaign - the most politically polarized are more actively involved in politics, amplifying the voices that are the least willing to see the parties meet each other halfway," the survey stated.

They also found that ideological uniformity is more widespread in people who are politically engaged than in the general public and that people are likely to separate themselves in their personal lives from those on the opposite side.
