President Barack Obama signed an executive order today making it illegal to fire or harass employees with the federal government or it's contractors based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

"More states now allow same sex marriage than prohibit discrimination against LGBT workers, so I firmly believe that it's time to address this injustice for every American," he said.

The order did not include a religious-based exemption for companies with religious objections. Christianity Today reported the order could impact religious non-profits such as World Vision, World Relief and Catholic Charities.

Why is this study significant? Christopher Doyle, president of Voice of the Voiceless, answered this question and more on CBN News, July 21.

A pre-existing exemption will reportedly remain in place. That exemption was created by President George W. Bush.

It allows religious contractors to employ only fellow believers, but it's not clear if those employers can extend that exemption to cover sexual orientation.

The Family Research Council says challenges could be brought by people who claim to be a part of a church body but have lifestyles that don't follow the church's teaching.

They say the executive order could make faith groups forgo federal contracts.

Meanwhile, Centers for Disease Control study reports that less than three percent of the U.S. population identifies themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual.
