Obama Taps San Antonio Mayor for Housing Sec.

President Barack Obama has nominated San Antonio, Texas, Mayor Julian Castro for the role of housing secretary.

Current Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan has been tapped to run the White House Office of Management and Budget.

The president chose Castro to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2012.

The two men's life stories are similar: Both are minorities raised by single mothers, and both hold Harvard law degrees and saw their political careers skyrocket after giving lauded Democratic convention keynote speeches.

Castro, 39, is frequently being talked about as a possible Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2016.

As a three-term mayor of San Antonio, Castro supported a controversial ordinance protecting gay and transgendered people against bias.

Critics say the ordinance hinders freedom of speech and religion.

If he is confirmed by the Senate, Castro would become one of the highest-ranking Hispanic officials serving at the pleasure of the president.
