Former GOP Pennsylvania senator and presidential candidate Rick Santorum says Republicans must appeal to blue collar voters or risk losing the White House forever.

It's an issue Santorum tackles in his new book, Blue Collar Conservatives: Recommitting to an America That Works.

"Do Republicans really care less about the person at the bottom of the ladder than Democrats do? To be painfully honest, I would have to say in some ways 'yes,'" Santorum writes.

"There are some in my party who have taken the ideal of individualism to such an extreme that they have forgotten the obligation to look out for our fellow man," he charged.

For instance, Santorum told CBN News that it's hard for Republicans to argue that they're for the middle class worker while opposing raising the minimum wage.

"Having some minimum wage standard that covers what I proposed is the historical norm, which is around 5 to 7 percent of workers," Santorum said. "Right now only 2 percent of Americans make the minimum wage."

In his book, Santorum lays out a game plan for how the GOP can reach out to blue collar Americans and return the party to its original values.

"It is not about Republican, Democratic, conservative," he told CBN News. "It is about trying to find a message that can actually bring people together."
