A move for a "fast track" free trade bill is set to work its way through the Senate.

The "Trade Promotion Authority" bill, or TPA, would allow the White House to make new trade deals with Asian and European nations then pass the bills through Congress using expedited procedures.

The deals would not be able to be amended and they get a simple up-or-down vote from Congress.

President Barack Obama and Republicans support the measure, but many top Democrats and liberal groups oppose the plan, saying free trade agreements hurt American jobs.

"I have never, ever in my 33 years in Congress ever supported — ever supported — a trade agreement. I'm not going to start now," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,  told reporters.

"They're not good for the American people. They're not good for working men and women. It puts us at a disadvantage," he said.
