Major Victory for Tea Party Groups Targeted by IRS

WASHINGTON -- A federal judge has ordered the IRS to resolve pending applications for tax exempt status from Tea Party applicants.

The tax agency has been under investigation for targeting conservative groups and subjecting their applications to intense scrutiny and delays.

Now District Judge Reggie B. Walton has ruled the IRS must issue determinations by Nov. 11.

The American Center for Law and Justice represents 38 groups that are suing the agency. ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow called the judge's order a major victory.

"The court's requirement that the IRS give account for its conduct is a tacit acknowledgment that plaintiffs—as well as the American public—deserve honesty and transparency from their government," he said.

According to the ACLJ website, one client, The Albuquerque Tea Party, applied for tax-exempt status nearly seven years ago. A second client, Unite in Action, has been waiting on approval since May of 2010.

Under the judge's rulings both clients will finally receive determinations.
