Detention for Uncle Sam? Trump Takes Aim at Gov't Role in Education

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday aimed at reducing the federal government's role in education.

"For too long the federal government has imposed its will on state and local government," said President Trump.

The order directs Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to review where Washington has overstepped its legal authority in education issues.

"When we give decision making power back to states, students benefit," DeVos said.

The executive order's focus is on K-12 education, and once DeVos' report is complete she will then be able to modify and repeal regulations issued by her department.

Wednesday's order is one of many the president plans to sign this week ahead of his 100th day in office.
