Washington - Republican Rep. Bob Goodlatte announced Thursday that he plans to retire.

Goodlatte is a 13-term congressman from Virginia and Chair of the House Judiciary Committee.

"It's the right time for me to step aside and let someone else serve the sixth district," said Goodlatte in a statement.

The 65-year-old describes this move as a "natural stepping-off point" stating his tenure as chairman of the judiciary panel ends in December 2018.

Goodlatte joins Texas Representatives Jeb Hensarling and Lamar Smith who are also stepping down at the end of their terms.
