A second grader in Cypress, Texas, was told not to read her Bible during "read to myself" independent reading time, according to the Liberty Institute.

Her parents said they went to the institute instead of Hamilton Elementary to complain about the action because they were afraid of backlash from the school.

They said they do not want the teacher to get into trouble, but they want their daughter to be free to read the Bible.

Other parents at the school are also upset.

"It's shocking actually. I mean - it's a Bible. It's not like there's anything wrong with it," one parent, Tiffany Markovsky, said.

"You don't want to offend anybody, but yet you don't want to make anybody feel like they don't have the freedom to do what they want to do and the freedom to choose and to believe what they want to believe," another parent, Cynthia Burris, said.

The lawyer for the school district said they have investigated the case but have not found any confirmation that it actually took place.

Still, school officials released a letter saying students can read the Bible during independent reading time. The only requirements are that a book be "appropriate" and on the student's reading level.

The district said school officials will meet with faculty to explain the policy.
