Firefighters have tamed a fast-moving wildfire that forced more than a thousand from their homes in Central California earlier this week.

Some of those who were evacuated are returning to their homes Wednesday.

"We're not seeing the fire expand like we thought," Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said Tuesday.

The blaze in Madera County burned nearly a square mile and destroyed eight structures.

A road leading visitors to Yosemite National Park reopened Tuesday, and the park itself remained unaffected by the blaze.

State Route 41 had closed down and classes for most of the Yosemite Unified School District were cancelled Tuesday.

The wildfire came amid California's third straight year of drought.
