A new poll shows the majority of Americans agree that better transportation is worthwhile, but they're divided over how to pay for it.

The poll found 6 out of 10 respondents believe the economic benefits of good highways, railroads, and airports outweigh the cost.

Of those who spend a lot of time on the road, 62 percent say the benefits outweigh the expenditures. Fifty-five percent who drive once a week or less also say improving roads is worth the cost.

But 58 percent of those surveyed oppose raising federal gasoline taxes to fund transportation projects. Only 14 percent support an increase.

The majority of respondents also oppose paying private companies to do the construction in exchange for the right to charge tolls.

The latest Associated Press-GfK poll, conducted by GfK Public Affairs and Corporate Communications, interviewed 1,044 adult members of GfK's Knowledge Panel online, both in English and Spanish.
