Environmental officials in North Carolina are warning residents to avoid the Dan River after a coal burning power plant leaked tons of ash into the water.

The leak from Duke Energy dumped up to 82,000 tons of ash into the river Feb. 2.

The company said they plugged the leak Saturday, six days after the leak was reported.

North Carolina's environmental agency said it made a mistake earlier when it declared the arsenic levels in the river safe for people.

But a water sample taken two days after the spill was four times higher than the maximum safety level for prolonged contact.
