Government and non-profit agencies in Dallas are scrambling to take in thousands of immigrant children who crossed the border unaccompanied.

The community already has about 1,000 alien minors without parents, and now it's pledging to take in 2,000 more.

Religious groups, including Catholic Charities and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, are among the many groups stepping up to help.

Kathryn Wohlander, with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, said the group's core mission is to provide assistance to those in need.

Catholic Charities' Vanna Slaughter agreed, saying it's crucial the children get immediate help.

"These kids need a lot of help and nurturing and assurance and to make sure their life and adjustments and life in America is successful," she said.

Meanwhile, the town of Murietta, California, is turning away busloads of undocumented families.

At a town hall meeting Tuesday, people said the United States can't afford to provide for a massive influx of needy people who aren't citizens. Some pointed to the scandal surrounding Veterans Administration hospitals as proof that not even the most deserving Americans are getting the help they need.

Others complained that if the government can ship border crashers across the United States, then it should be able to send them back to their homes.

The U.S. Border Patrol is arresting about 1,200 people a day, so it's likely more illegal immigrants will be sent to other communities across the country.
