A California man who threatened to bomb the Los Angeles subway system is in custody Tuesday.

The FBI arrested 20-year-old Nicholas Teausant Sunday near the Canadian border. He's been charged with trying to provide support to Islamic extremists in Syria.

The National Guardsman planned to travel to Syria to join al Qaeda to fight for "Allah's army."

Authorities said Teausant posted several terrorist messages on social media sites. He indicated he wanted to conduct jihad and be part of America's downfall.

Friends who know Teausant from a local church youth group said he often kept to himself.

The maximum penalty for supporting a foreign terror group is 15 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine.
