Tennessee public schools are one step closer to being able to celebrate Christmas without fear of being sued.

The state House approved legislation by 83-4 on Thursday that protects schools from lawsuits over religious items during the holidays.

Last month, the state Senate version was unanimously approved 30-0.

The proposal also allows students and staff to say "Merry Christmas" freely and other traditional greetings like 'Happy Hanukkah" and "Happy Holidays."

The measure explains that more than one religion should be displayed and that messages that encourage adhering to a specific religious belief are prohibited.

Supporters said some groups have threatened to sue over such displays and greetings, and the legislation would protect schools.
