A man opened fire Monday night at the world's largest naval base in Norfolk, Va., killing two people.

The incident took place aboard the USS Mahan at Naval Station Norfolk, putting the base on lockdown for about 45 minutes.

One sailor and one civilian were pronounced dead at the scene. Navy officials said security forces shot and killed the civilian suspect.

"I'd like to say that our thoughts and prayers go out to the family members of those affected by the tragic event last night," Capt. Robert Clark, commanding officer at the naval station, told Norfolk's WAVY-10.

Officials are investigating how the civilian, who was authorized to be there, was able to get the weapon on base.
