'Illegal Tax Bill' Could Shut Down Arizona Church

A small Arizona church that helps the homeless could be forced into foreclosure over a hefty tax bill it might not actually owe.

La Paz County said the Church of the Isaiah 58 Project must pay $68,000 in taxes and penalties, even though the Arizona Department of Revenue says the church doesn't owe that money.

Attorneys from the Alliance Defending Freedom represent the church in a lawsuit over the taxes. They say the church might have to close because the courts won't defer the payment until the suit is over.

"Churches shouldn't live in fear of being punished by the government when they've not done anything wrong," ADF Senior Legal Counsel Erik Stanley said.

The ADF said supporters have donated money to help pay the "illegal tax bill" to help the church stay open and continue its lawsuit, but it still needs about $30,000.

If the church can't pay up by June 15, it will be forced to foreclose.
