Gay marriage is legal in 17 states and Washington D.C. and the number keeps growing.

Dozens of gay couples are getting married in Oregon after a judge invalidated the state's ban on same-sex marriage Monday.

"While tonight's newscast will feature tearful couples at staged PR activities in courthouses across the state, the real tears should be for the next generation as we witness our constitutional republic sink into a banana republic," Oregon Family Council spokesperson Teresa Harke said.

In Utah Monday, U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball ordered state officials to recognize 1,000 gay marriages filed during the two weeks when the state's ban was invalidated.

Judges also have ordered Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Indiana to recognize same-sex marriages from other states.

In recent months, state and federal judges from 11 states have overturned gay marriage bans, and attorneys general from seven states refuse to defend voter-approved amendments defining traditional marriage.
