President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to American troops in Afghanistan over Memorial Day weekend.

The trip was kept so secret it was announced only after he landed in Kabul Sunday.

Obama spent time speaking with troops and visiting soldiers at a base hospital. He thanked them for their sacrifice and vowed to stay strong as a nation by taking care of their families and the nation's veterans.

His visit comes as the Afghanistan war continues to wind down. With only months before the scheduled withdrawal of U.S. troops, it still isn't clear what role the U.S. will play in the conflict-torn nation.

The president is expected to give details of his post-2014 Afghanistan plan during a commencement address at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point Wednesday.
