'Man It's Cold!' Arctic Chill Plunges Deeper into US

An Arctic chill is plunging deeper into the nation's mid-section and South Wednesday. The cold blast could even send temperatures crashing into the subzero zone in some parts of the country.

In many places, temperatures fell 20 to 30 degrees in less than one hour, coupled with strong winds.

"Arctic air that will head all the way down into Texas by the middle part of the week," AccuWeather meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

One resident said, "And then you got this wild chill. Man it makes it really cold."

In Denver Tuesday, temperatures only reached a high of 16 degrees, beating the old 1916 record of 19.

Then there's the heavy snow and ice that's causing havoc for travelers, with dozens of flights delayed and massive pileups on the roads.

Minnesota alone saw tractor trailers stuck on the ice and nearly 500 crashes, including one big rig that barreled into a state trooper's patrol car.

"How everyone walked away from that is nothing short of a miracle," Rogers Police Chief Jeff Beahen said.

Meanwhile, thousands are digging out from under blankets of an early winter snow, including Wisconsin where more than a foot of snow has fallen and more is expected.

"This is early for this kind of snow," Crivitz, Wisconsin, resident Betty Rogalski said. "We're looking for snow around Thanksgiving time. So it's a couple weeks early....and so much of it."

The nasty weather also put a damper on a church-sponsored Thanksgiving dinner. Organizers expect to have more leftovers than anticipated.

"I think the weather will get in the way. We were supposed to have 125. I think if we get 100 we'll be lucky," Saint Mary's Catholic Church member Kathy Nowak predicted.

Forecasters say the cold weather is expected the hang around for a while.

Some areas have even seen blizzard-like conditions. Michigan's Upper Peninsula has been slammed by up to 25 inches of snow, with more on the way.
