Ferguson: National Guard Leaves as Tensions Ease

Gov. Jay Nixon is ordering the withdrawal of the National Guard from Ferguson, Missouri.

The decision comes as tensions seem to be easing down after two weeks of violent protests over the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

"We're heading toward a sense of peace for our community. Through 12:30 a.m., there were just seven arrests, including five for failing to disperse," Missouri State Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson said. "Tonight was a very good night."

Johnson said the city will continue to have a strong police presence. Authorities have arrested at least 163 people since protests began on Aug. 9.

Nixon said National Guard officers have effectively protected the city while other agencies worked to restore trust between law enforcement and residents.

Officer Darren Wilson, responsible for shooting Brown, is on administrative leave while an investigation is underway.
