California's Los Angeles County has approved putting a cross back on its official seal. The cross was removed 10 years ago after the American Civil Liberties Union threatened to sue.

The seal was redesigned nine years ago, but at the time there was no cross on top of the San Gabriel Mission. The cross had been taken down for retrofitting after an earthquake. It was restored to the structure in 2009.

Now, two county supervisors want the cross put back on the seal to make the depiction of the San Gabriel Mission artistically and architecturally accurate.

Several residents spoke in favor of the move during a board meeting this week.

The ACLU said a religious symbol on a county seal is unconstitutional and the county should expect lawsuits.
