Deadly Cold Continues to Grip Midwest, Northeast

Bone-chilling cold is crippling the Midwest and Northeast Thursday, with at least two dozen states under wind chill warnings or advisories.

Minneapolis' high is -4, but with the wind chill it could feel like -35. And in Chicago, the high is 11 degrees. The wind chill there, however, made it seem closer to -20.

Unlike the cold outbreak earlier this month, forecasters warn that this arctic freeze has some staying power. It's expected to stick around through the end of the month.

Residents in the Northeast are fighting the cold as they try to dig out of some heavy snowfall. About a foot fell in New York City, more than 13 inches in Philadelphia, and in parts of New Jersey, more than 15 inches.

"I would come out every two hours because it was getting higher and higher and higher," Manalapan, N.J., resident Kevin Paccione said.

Roads across the Northeast more closely resemble ice skating rinks, causing real problems for commuters.

"It's been pretty rough out here. The roads are real bad. The ice has been stacking up," New Jersey commuter Steve Arecchi said.

"It's so bad out here. It really is," another commuter said. "I'm slipping and sliding at every light."

Frozen airports in the Northeast are affecting the rest of the country. During the last 48 hours, more than 5,000 flights have been delayed. About 1,000 flights were postponed Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, forecasters warn the worst is still to come.

Another wave of cold is expected to hit the Midwest and Northeast over the next few days -- severe enough to bring life-threatening conditions, hypothermia, and the risk of frostbite.
