A Maryland man is in custody on charges of trying to support ISIS, as well as receiving money to carry out an attack on U.S. soil.

According to the FBI, Mohamed Elshinawy began communicating through social media with a childhood friend in Egypt earlier this year.

He pledged allegiance to ISIS in February and started receiving thousands of dollars from individuals associated with the jihadist army.

Elshinawy reportedly says he was instructed to use the money for "operational purposes" -  which he understood to mean causing destruction and conducting a terrorist attack in the U.S.
