At least nine people were gunned down in an African-American church in Charleston, SC, Wednesday evening in what police are calling a "hate crime" shooting. Several others were injured.

Charleston police described the gunman, who remains at large, on Twitter as a "21-year-old white man wearing a sweatshirt, jeans and boots."

"I do believe that this is a hate crime," Police Chief Gregory Mullen told reporters.

Later, a bomb threat was reported not far from the Emanuel AME Church, where the shooting took place around 9 p.m.

The church, one of South Carolina's oldest and most historic, was built in 1891.
