Cancer-Free Carter Swings Hammer with Habitat for Humanity

Former President Jimmy Carter is giving back after he says God blessed him with good health.

A year ago Carter was only given a few weeks to live after he was diagnosed with aggressive cancer, melanoma that had spread to his brain.

But in March he announced a miraculous healing that left him cancer-free.

"Now I feel pretty certain about my cure and the cancer being in remission, but the doctors are still keeping an eye on me," Carter said at a press conference Monday.

Despite being 91 years old and a recent cancer survivor, Carter is still using his time to help the needy by continuing to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

"Habitat for Humanity is the best way I know to take whatever talents I have and invest them in the name of Christ for the benefit of others," Carter said.

Carter worked with more than 1,500 volunteers Monday to build 19 new homes for poor families in Memphis.

"Well, I'm feeling good right now. I'm weaker than I used to be. That's the only thing different, but I'm 92-years-old (he turns 92 in October) so I guess that's to be expected," he said.
