The chief of police in Milwaukee says the city has calmed down since the shooting death of a black man last Saturday.

Milwaukee erupted into violent protests Monday night, leading to heated confrontations, burning businesses and 14 arrests. Authorities say the level of violence they saw was unexpected.

"This was, quite frankly, unanticipated," Police Chief Edward Flynn said Monday.

Police forces cracked down on violent perpetrators, enforcing curfews and sometimes clashing with angry residents.

The violence came after an African-American police officer fatally shot a black man named Sylville Smith during a traffic stop. Smith bolted from the car with a gun, leading an officer on a short foot chase before the officer shot the 23-year-old man.

Authorities say police body cameras show the man was armed and refused to drop his weapon. Despite this new revelation, the investigation is ongoing and more details about the shooting will surface.

At least for now, the streets are calmer and tensions have slightly eased.

Smith's death was the latest in a series of shootings involving police and black men to spark demonstrations and protests.
