A 7-year-old boy sent up a letter in a balloon to his late father, and unexpectedly received an answer back, according to a recent report

His mother calls it a "Christmas miracle."

Alejandro sends his father two helium filled balloons a year with a photo and letter attached: one on his birthday and the other on the anniversary of his death.

He watched his father, a prominent lawyer, die after he was gunned down and robbed when they lived in their hometown of Cúcuta, Colombia.

He believes that his letter reaches his father in heaven, his mother, Catherine Bonilla Ramirez told ABC News.

This year his letter was found in a couple's yard that lives 20 miles away. They ended up opening the letter and could not resist letting Alejandro know his dad was okay.

"My husband and I found the balloon in our yard," Suzanne Edwards said.

The letter reads, "Daddy, I wish you were here so we could have fun together. I wish you a Merry Christmas. I hope you tell God to give me those presents. I hope you are happy in heaven. If you are, then tell me. I love you, Alejandro."

"After reading it, I was in tears. My heart was broken for the little boy," Edwards said.

"I thought that if he did not receive a response he would assume that his dad was not okay. So I felt a responsibility to respond to him," added Edwards.

Edwards decided to share the letter on Facebook, hoping the boy would see that his letter was received.

The post circulated fast and reached Alejandro's mother.

"He had tears in his eyes. He was happy to know his father is okay in heaven and heaven is a very good place for him," said Ramirez. "For Alejandro, his father was his hero. They were inseparable."

Edwards said she is going to give Alejandro a handwritten response and a Bible with balloons.

He will also get the Christmas gifts he asked for from the online Good Samaritans that read the Facebook post and reached out to Ramirez.

"I feel that this happened because miracles exist. I believe my husband used angels to tell Alejandro he's okay in heaven," Ramirez said.
