A judge in Oregon has granted a groundbreaking request to a transgender person, establishing a new legally recognized third gender.

The Portland Oregonian reports a Multnomah County circuit judge legally changed 52-year-old Jamie Shupe's gender from female to "non- binary."

Shupe was born male, but feels like a woman. So using the term "non-binary" is supposed to encompass both aspects of Shupe's identity.

"I'm a mixture of both. I consider myself a third sex," Shupe said.

Under Oregon law, a judge can legally change a person's gender without a doctor's note.
