The governor of Mississippi says he is not backing down in the fight for religious freedom.

Gov. Phil Bryant shared those remarks as the Family Research Council bestowed the first-ever Samuel Adams Religious Freedom Award on him.

"Targeted by those who wish to advance a radical social agenda, Gov. Bryant has stood firm and unequivocal in defending religious liberty for the citizens of Mississippi," said FRC President Tony Perkins. "Inflexible in matters of truth, yet committed to the welfare of his fellow man, Phil Bryant embodies the kind of leader Samuel Adams envisioned to sustain virtue in public life and freedom in public law."

Bryant, who signed House Bill 1523, a religious liberty bill, into law is the first recipient of the award.

The measure would protect clerks who choose not to issue a marriage license to same-sex couples because of their religious convictions.

Bryant said the bill is upsetting the "secular progressive world," but it is more important to take a stand.

"If it takes crucifixion, we will stand in line before abandoning our faith and our belief in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ," he said.

The bill is set to become law July 1, though two legal challenges are seeking to block the measure.
