A snow storm sweeping through the Plains is bringing winter early after an unseasonably warm fall.

Nine states are suffering their first blizzard, including Utah and Wyoming, which has seen temperatures plunges as much as 50 degrees.

Heavy snowfall downed power lines and made it nearly impossible to see on the roads.

Cars were sliding, spinning and stalling out, and at least one person was killed in a pile-up on Interstate 70 near Denver.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said there was a safety closure due to slide-offs eastbound on the highway.

"Oh, I don't like it. It's cold, came all at once, and it's pretty slippery and pretty dangerous out here," said an I-70 driver.

Snow will continue to fall in the Dakotas, Nebraska, and northern Minnesota. Gusts of up to 60 mph are expected to cause whiteout conditions.
