The 6-year-old boy who was critically wounded after a gunman opened fire at his South Carolina elementary school will have a superhero funeral.

Jacob Hall had been fighting for his life since late Thursday after a bullet struck him in a main artery in his leg, causing a major brain injury due to the loss of blood. He passed away Saturday.

Jacob's mother, Renae Hall, said her son loved superheroes, and his uncles and brothers, who will be the pallbearers at the funeral, will be dressed in superhero outfits.

Jacob, another student, and a first-grade teacher at Townville Elementary were wounded by a teenager, who had just killed his father at his home. The teen then drove to the school and started firing with a handgun.

Friends, family, and people all over social media had been praying for Jacob to recover from his injuries and using the #PrayersforJacob hashtag to raise awareness.

Jacob died surrounded by his family at Greenville Health System Children's Hospital on Saturday, his parents said in a statement.

Renae Hall said her son was a little boy who endured an early birth and asthma to become, in his parents' eyes, a superhero and an angel. The family is relying on their Christian faith to help them them through the tragedy.

"He was going to show people how we were brought to this world to love each other, not to hate," Renae said.

She says her son's life is a life to be celebrated.

"Jacob taught me to love God. Jacob loved God so much that he was not afraid to go home to God," she said.

The boy was known for his bright-eyed smile and his love for the Lord. Family members told Greenville Online that he attended church regularly at Oakdale Baptist Church in Townville and he recently gave his life to the Lord.

"He comes in Sunday School every Sunday morning with just a smile on his face," Tim Marcengill, Oakdale's associate pastor, said at a prayer vigil prior to Jacob's death. "He'll make you laugh and tell you he loves you. And he loves the Lord, and he knew that the Lord loves him. Several weeks back, his grandfather led him to faith even though he's 6 years old, he had an understanding. He's able to just make everybody in there on a Sunday morning light up."

Jacob's funeral is planned for Wednesday. A GoFundMe page started by a family friend raised more than $125,000 in donations since it went up Wednesday night.

The teen shooter was charged as a juvenile Friday with murder and three counts of attempted murder. Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting.
