Elementary aged kids walking to their Colorado Springs elementary school were hit by a car and saved moments later by five heroic strangers who lifted the vehicle off of them, an eye witness said.

The children have not been identified by name but they are all related. Three of them are siblings and one is a cousin.

The kindergartener, first grader, second and fifth grader were walking together and crossing right outside of the James Monroe Elementary School with a crossing guard when they were hit.

The status of the second oldest has been released, a second-grade girl, who is now in critical but stable condition in the hospital.

Eye witness, Amanda Shafer told a local CBS station that, “(the crossing guard) looked every way, nobody was coming. She told the kids they could proceed. There were four of them.”

“The guy hit on the gas and turned right onto Chelton, ran over all the children. It sent one over the hood of his car. At that point all the children were stuck under the car. Five gentleman lifted the car by hand, off the children and then the paramedics arrived,” said Shafer.

Shortly after the incident, the school issued a statement tweeted a reminder to slow down while driving close to the school.

Local officers said the driver did not deliberately do this but they are checking to see if drugs could have played a role in the incident.

The community has offered support to the students, teachers and the crossing guard.
