The abortion rate has dropped to its lowest level since 1973, according to a new report from the Guttmacher Institute, the research arm of Planned Parenthood.

The latest national survey shows the number of abortions dropped by 13 percent between 2008 and 2011.

The study suggests longer-acting contraceptives are reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies.

"Contraceptive use improved during this period, as more women and couples were using highly effective long-acting reversible contraceptive methods," Rachel Jones, the study's lead author, said.

"Moreover, the recent recession led many women and couples to want to avoid or delay pregnancy and childbearing," she said.

Many states have enacted tougher abortion laws, but most did not go into effect before 2011.
