Police say a Dayton, Ohio, bus driver lied when he said he was shot at and stabbed by three black teens

Rickey Wagoner, 49, claimed his life was saved when the Bible in his shirt pocket stopped the bullets during the alleged Feb. 24 attack.

But the Dayton Daily News reports a reconstruction of the crime scene shows Wagoner staged the incident.

Police say Wagoner stabbed himself, and shot his own Bible after placing it on the ground.

"We do not have three armed male offenders stalking members of the community and assaulting them," Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said. "The assault as reported is not accurate."

The Dayton Regional Transportation Authority apologized for Wagoner's actions and has placed him on administrative leave.

"All of us at RTA are angry at the thought that an employee would allegedly mislead the police, the public, and us and use ugly racial stereotypes in doing so," RTA Executive Director Mark Donaghy said.
