Entering the sixth year of Barack Obama's presidency, the majority of Americans are less than impressed by their commander in chief's performance.

A new Associated Press-GfK poll found 31 percent of Americans describe Obama as an above-average president, while 2 percent view him as average and 42 percent describe his presidency as below average or poor.

Only a days before Obama stands before Americans to deliver his annual State of the Union address next Tuesday, the majority of the population is still pessimistic about the country's direction.

Seventy percent think unemployment will grow or stay the same, and more than 50 percent of Americans wouldn't describe the president as decisive or honest.

The president's overall approval rating has remained fairly stable, with 45 percent of respondents approving his performance and 53 percent saying they don't.

Meanwhile, just 14 percent of Americans approve of Congress, up from a low of 5 percent after the government shutdown, but still nothing to celebrate.

Nine out of 10 Republicans say they disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job. It's the first time that's happened in AP-GfK polling since Republicans took control of the House following the 2010 elections.
