Ruling Creates Confusion over Marriage in Arkansas

Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel plans to appeal a county judge's ruling overturning a state amendment defining marriage as being between a man and a woman.

The decision by Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza comes 10 years after voters approved the law.

Meanwhile, several county clerks were left confused over whether the ruling was valid while gay couples lined up to get marriage licenses.

One clerk said only the state Supreme Court can strike down a state law and she will not issue licenses until that happens.

Fifteen gay marriage license were issued in Carroll County, believed to be the only county that issued marriage licenses Saturday.

Several courthouses were open for early primary-election voting, but staffers said they were not prepared to issue marriage licenses.

McDaniel has asked Piazza to suspend his ruling, but also formally said late Saturday he wants the state Supreme Court to take up the matter. That appeal has not yet been filed.
