Kentucky Gears Up Fight over Gay Marriage Ruling

Gov. Steve Beshear is hiring outside attorneys to appeal a court order for Kentucky to recognize same-sex marriages from other states and countries.

Beshear made the announcement Tuesday after the state's Attorney General Jack Conway refused to appeal the ruling.

A federal judge ruled in February that the state's voter-approved ban on recognizing same-sex marriages violates the constitution because it treats "gay and lesbian persons in a way that demeans them."

The decision means Kentucky will have to allow same-sex couples married outside the state to obtain the same benefits of a heterosexual married couple in the state.
