The search is on for the black boxes that hold the key to what happened aboard the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.

With only a few days remaining before the batteries on the boxes die out, searchers are now looking underwater in a desperate race against time.

The battery-powered devices stop transmitting the pings about 30 days after a crash.

The head of the joint search operation announced Friday that British and Australian search vessels are covering a 149-mile track in the southern Indian Ocean.

"[There is] some hope we will find the aircraft in the area we are searching," Australian Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston said.

The area the ships are searching, about the size of Ireland, was chosen based on hourly satellite pings the aircraft emitted after it vanished from radar screens on March 8.
